We have successfully closed the section on
“trending now” which dealt with interesting topics like pop of color, creating
a feature wall, mixing textures and patterns, picture arrangements among others. Today we begin a new section, designing your space. Designing a space
is not all about your personal style, it’s also about functionality. Therefore,
the most important thing to take note of or have in mind when it comes to
designing is the levels of functionally you want to achieve with the space. You
have to put into consideration the following;
- Your budget
- Size of the space
- Shape of the space
- Color of the space (painting)
- Type of furnishing
- Type of appliances
- Lighting and accessories needed
- The design style you want i.e. by era or by culture.
It essentially means the theme you want to
incorporate into your designing. It can but modern, medieval e.t.c using era or
Oriental, Mexican, European going by cultures. It is always better to stick to
one theme even though a lot of people try to mix themes. I'm not saying themes
can’t be mixed but you have to be very careful doing so or simply bring in the
experts for example, a modern and safari (jungle) theme can be mixed. All you
have to do is make it all modern and contemporary and then throw in the safari
with the accessories. If you have just moved into a new apartment, you mustn't follow the pattern of decorating the last person used, cover up any unnecessary
window/door to create a wall and open a useful one elsewhere. Try to declutter
your home every once in a while, you don’t need to be moving into a new place
to do that. The rule of thumb for decluttering is purging; i.e. “To bring in
something new, you either have to already have room for it or you make room for
it by letting go of the old ones. A trick I normally use when organizing especially a wardrobe or cabinet is to give the client a feeling of shopping
each time they walk into their closet or open their cabinets.
In this section we shall be taking on designing
a few spaces, they include;
- How to design your bedroom
- How to design your kitchen
- How to decorate your office
- How to decorate your living room
- How to style your outdoor spaces
- How to design your recreational spaces e.g. gym, spa, movie theater, library e.t.c.
- How to design your bathroom
These few areas were chosen because they are key
spaces in any house. This section, if you like can be tagged the “HOW TO”
section.
*** REMEMBER, THE WAY YOU DRESS IS A REFLECTION
OF WHO YOU ARE, THIS ALSO IS SAME FOR THE WAY YOU STYLE YOUR SPACE.
